PRODUCTION

Directors / Writers

“El Síndrome de esto es el colmo” is co-written and co-directed by Mariana Tschudi, Katja Kulenkampff and Franziska Agrawal. Mariana Tschudi, as the only native Spanish speaker, directs the shootings, while Franziska Agrawal is in charge of photography and Katja Kulenkampff the art direction. Nevertheless, the most important decisions are always taken beforehand by mutual consent.

Production

The production of SINDROME largely came together through a series of coincidences and well… by just simply keeping an open mind to chance. Without a budget and with the help of many supportive minds, the idea of creating a web series went from the MSN chat-room to the streets of Lima.

Several creative and ingenious people assisted us not only in developing the look and storyline of the series, but also in helping us actually make it happen. We want to especially thank: Alex Ureña, Carlos Daniel Rubber, Juan Manuel Benavides and Alejandra Devescovi

The Story

The story of “El Síndrome de esto es el colmo” mirrors the complex structure of Lima society. With subtle sarcasm and through the lives of the five main characters, Lima’s society, with its extreme social differences and cultural encounters, is portrayed as an additional character.

As a result, our main characters range from "Darwin Gómez", a native from the Peruvian countryside, in search of a better future in the city, working any jobs he can find (the typical Peruvian ‘all-around worker’) to the Russian tourist "Zorica" who is fascinated by traditional Peruvian culture, has altruistic ideals and an absurdly revolutionary attitude and who wants to bring about a social change in Peru. Respectively, each of the three other characters, Catalina Peña, Rafael Tudela and Federico Barreda Rizo-Patrón reflect a different sterotype of society, from working class to aristocratic Lima. All five characters are between 25 and 30 years old. Yet, how to tie all characters together into one story? What do they have in common with each other?

Something that is considered sarcastic and spiritual at the same time: their superstitions, their irrational believes not based on reason or knowledge, but essential to their spirituality. Few people escape being superstitious and many people around the world possess some kind of lucky charm and/or believe in a chance at luck, whether open or secretly, we all sometimes want to believe that something outside our own efforts can determine our luck.

Our Finances

Up until now, everyone involved in creating the SINDROME has taken a risk, financially and emotionally, from the actors, the creative and technical teams to the producers: everybody has volunteered and helped out with their know-how, their equipment, and of course their free time to produce a high-quality web-series. Thanks to their efforts and their believe in this project we have been able to create a pilot, the first three episodes. We not only want to focus on creating an entertaining and interesting story, we also want to concentrate on good acting and high-quality photography. For that reason, we are working on finding the necessary financing to continue filming the remaining 10 episodes of season 1. We hope that in the near future we will be able to give you the entire image of Peruvian life from the heart of Lima.
